Heart Evangelista gets candid as she recalls early days of being a stepmom: ‘My God! Anong nangyari sa life ko?’
Heart Evangelista was joined by her husband, Senator Chiz Escudero, for an exclusive and very insightful interview on “Fast Talk with Boy Abunda" Thursday.
In the course of their conversation, the Global Fashion Icon unexpectedly turned candid while talking about her stepchildren, Chesi and Quino.
“I’m very good with them. They’re really, really good kids. They were brought up very well,” Heart began, admitting she's more strict on the kids than her husband, especially when it came to curfews and the night life.
“I feel like si Chiz, he was always like very — not naman, you’re not sheltered, pero hindi ka rin ‘yung tipong gumigimik. Hindi siya ‘yung tipong gano’n. He was always very studious and stuff like that. I’ve seen what goes on in the nightlife,” she explained.
Heart shared that she often talks about K-pop and fashion with the kids.
“It’s nice because I feel like, in a sense, it sounds really weird, but I feel like I also grew up with them. I didn’t give them the gift of life, but I was there at a certain age. I was still very young, kumbaga hindi rin ako masyadong mature nung time na ‘yon, and they taught me how to love differently in a special way. Hindi ko matututunan ‘yon sa iba, so we have a good relationship,” she said.
Chiz said the kids were around seven or eight years old when they got married and were not at all jealous of Heart. “Ang tingin nila magkakadagdag na mommy sila ulit," he said.
Heart however admitted that she got jealous of them.
"It was really more ako, kasi bata-isip ako eh. I mean, kelan lang ba ako nag-mature in my life?" She admitted, explaining she was only around 26 years old at the time and was the youngest in her family.
She recalled the early days of being a stepmom, when Chiz taught her the bedtime rituals of the twins. He had a lullaby for them, but "yung kanta niya is, basically ad-lib na words,” Heart said.
It became a challenge for Heart to ad-lib every night. "Anong sasabihin ko naman tonight?” she said, laughing.
“So umiiyak siya, hindi siya makatulog. Umiiyak din ako, na nafu-frustrate ako kasi hindi ko siya mapatulog, at meron akong gustong panoorin sa Netflix,” she said.
Chiz also looked back at when they went on a trip to America when the kids were six years old.
“Diyos ko! Diyos ko talaga!” Heart said when she remembered what Chiz was saying.
Chiz narrated how he held the kids' hands in each of his hands, with Heart carrying all their paper bags.
“Nag-rereklamo siya hindi ko hinahawakan ‘yung kamay niya eh dalawang bata ‘yung hawak ko," the senator recalled.
“Eh siyempre ako, nasa romantic moment pa ako, bagong-bago,” Heart followed.
“Sabi ko, ‘Naku, tama talaga ‘yung sinabi ng nanay ko sa 'kin.’ Medyo naiiyak na ako nasa outlet kami. Imbis na masaya kami sa outlet, sumasama na ang loob ko, hindi man lang siya sweet,” she said candidly.
But when Heart finally got what she wanted, one of the kids stumbled.
“So finally hinawakan niya na [ako], eh nadapa ‘yung isa. Katakot-takot na dapa ‘yung bagets no’n dahil sa 'kin,” she said.
After that, Heart started to become more understanding.
“Kasi nung mga time na ‘yon, nanggagaling ako sa siyempre, ‘pag gising mo sa umaga, maga-eyeliner ako, [mag-aayos] ako ng buhok, may pa-tease-tease. [At that time] wala. Isa lang ‘yung eyeliner ko, tusok na tusok, pinapaliguan ko ‘yung bagets, ‘My God! Anong nangyari sa life ko?’” she said.
“But because of that, I’m such a better person,” Heart said.
Heart and Chiz renewed their vows last month at the Royal Villa in Balesin Island, nine years after they tied the knot.
Earlier, Heart said she's ready to become a mother now more than ever.
“I feel like if there's any moment that I should be blessed with a baby, it should be now because I feel like I'm ready as a person, and I would be able to give more," she said in an interview.
