How did the engagement ring tradition start? Kuya Kim answers
A social media post has gone viral in recent days after an anonymous netizen sought advice online after receiving an engagement ring worth P299.
While some sympathized with the person who bought the ring, others said that the emotion of the post-sharer was valid.
But have you ever wondered when the first time an engagement ring was used?
According to Kuya Kim’s report on “24 Oras,” Thursday, an engagement ring, also known as a betrothal ring, symbolizes that the person wearing it is about to get married to their other half.
It also embodies the love, commitment, and marriage promise of the couple.
It is believed that the ancient Romans started the tradition of giving an engagement ring to their partners.
The Gemological Institute of America said that these rings were made from ivory, bones, copper, and metal.
In 850 CE, engagement rings were given an official meaning after Pope Nicholas I declared that they were jewelry that symbolized a man’s intention to marry.
Meanwhile, diamonds are the most popular stone used in engagement rings. A diamond engagement ring was first used in 1477 after being commissioned by Archduke Maximallian of Austria for his proposal to Mary of Burgundy.
As advice to the person who anonymously made the post, a psychiatrist said that all of our emotions are valid.
“We need to acknowledge also kung tayo ay nalungkot. Kung may mga question, i-communicate natin directly doon sa ating partner para hindi na siya lumaki. Maaari kasing ma-clarify ng kaniyang fiancé,” Dr. Joan Mae Perez-Rifareal said.
“Bottomline, hindi ang ring solely ang manifestation or symbol ng love. Pwede kasing through action,” she said.
