Paul Salas says past family trauma has affected relationships

Paul Salas has opened up about his past family traumas, which he said has affected his relationships.

On "Fast Talk with Boy Abunda" Thursday, Paul shared how it was only during the COVID-19 lockdown, when he realized he had trauma resulting from the separation of his parents, Universal Motion dancer Jim Salas and Michelle Solinap.

Paul was only 14 years old when his parents decided to separate. "Medyo hindi ko pa naiintindihan [nuon]," he said. "Ngayon ko pa lang talaga — maraming realizations na may mga past traumas pala ako about it."

Paul says it was only doing the lockdown, when he had time to reflect that he realized he had past traumas, hurts, and trust issues.

"Aminado po ako sa sarili ko sobra pa ko sa seloso," he said, adding just seeing a girlfriend talk to another man would lead him to believe she was out to break his heart.

According to Paul, it was only when he met Mikee that he realized just how traumatized he was. "[Si Mikee yung] parang, siya pa 'yung nakakita sa 'kin," Paul said.

"So, nung time po na pumapasok si Mikee sa buhay ko, ito 'yung time na masasabi kong dun ko siya na love dahil sa understanding niya sa akin, sa patience niya sa akin dahil 'yung past traumas ko po — alam ko po hindi nag-work si dad and mom," he said, adding he now knows "both sila nagkamali dun, kung ano man naging sitwasyon na 'yun."

But all that is in the past, Paul said. "Maayos na po yung family namin ngayon."

According to Paul, he would always talk to his parents about his life decisions and would always talk to them together, never individually, sometimes even with his dad's new wife and his mom's boyfriend.

Mikee, who was with Paul during the interview, said, "nagulat ako na 'di awkward."

"Ako po — kaya po sobrang blessed ang sinasabi ko ngayon dahil kahit na broken family kami, kung ano 'yung dream ko, sobrang supportive sila sa akin," Paul added.

To Mikee, he said, "Sa lahat ng struggles, kasiyahan, growth, gusto ko sa 'yo kasama."

To Paul, Mikee said, "Sana kapag may mga times na natri-trigger 'yung mga traumas natin both, I want to assure you na 'di mo kailangan mag-isip o kabahan kasi ikaw naman lagi kong pipiliin kahit mahirap."

The couple currently star on the TV show, "The Write One," with Ruru Madrid and Bianca Umali on GMA.
