She sent her boyfriend flowers on Valentine's Day, but 'pampatay nga lang'

Sending funeral flowers on Valentine's Day has become something of an Internet joke. We see it online, share it online, and laugh, but do we actually know someone who's given or received one?

Enter Fides Bernardo. She surprised her boyfriend Anton Segismundo by sending him funeral flowers on Valentine's Day.

And surprise him she did. "Takot na takot ako nung una kong nakita," Anton tells GMA News Online. "When I got the box, it was blank save for the receipt. Tapos nakalagay lang duon, '1 pamatay'."

He opened the box and when he smelled the flowers, "akala ko death threat."

It was only when Anton saw the dedication that he knew the package came from his girlfriend of three years.

"Patay na patay ako sa 'yo," read the message handwritten on the ribbon, draped across a bunch of white flowers arranged to look like a table-top version of funeral flowers.

"I wasn't expecting and as a guy, I'm not used to receiving flowers," Anton said.

"I thought it would be a perfect gift coming from me because my family owns a small funeral home business in Bulacan," Fides tells GMA News Online.

She started looking for something special to gift her boyfriend this Valentine's Day just one week ago. "I wanted it special because last year's Valentine's Day was not so nice," she said.

Fides thought of giving him roses but "I thought it would be boring. I wanted something different."

She remembered seeing the funeral flowers-Valentine's Day joke on social media so off she went looking for one. Her keywords? "Funeral flowers Valentines."

"I saw this flower shop in Manila with a pamatay series, and they had the table-top size so I got it for him," she said.

"I considered doing a full-size but the logistics — I was seriously thinking of doing that, naka-karo," Fides continued laughing.

"Baka sa birthday mo na lang," she teased Anton, who laughed and said of the flowers he received, "sobrang cute nito."

Don't worry: He also ordered a bouquet of flowers for Fides. Anton plans to give it to her later today, when they go out for a special Valentine's Day steak dinner.

How cute, isn't it? Happy Valentine's Day to those who celebrate! — LA, GMA Integrated News
