Carla Abellana says divorce from Tom Rodriguez has still not sunk in

It was announced in June that Carla Abellana and Tom Rodriguez got divorced, following months-long speculation about the state of their relationship.

In an interview on 'Updated with Nelson Canlas, Carla was asked whether her divorce has already sunk in.

“Hindi pa,” she answered. “You know why? Because number one kasi, divorce doesn't exist in the Philippines. Diba alam naman natin 'yan, either legal separation lang 'yan or nullity ng marriage.”

Tom is an American citizen, so he can file for divorce. Carla added that divorce remains a foreign concept and since it was processed in the United States, she still finds it hard to fully understand.

Given the different legal system in the Philippines, the Kapuso actress said, “Kumbaga, yung mind ko fully aware naman na, yes, divorce technically. Kumbaga when I go to the United States, divorced ako doon, single ako ulit, I am free, 'yung ganun ba.”

“Pero parang dito hindi eh, so I don't know maybe sa akin lang yon sa mind ko lang yon... Pero kasi iba pa rin 'yung sa atin pag recognized na ng mismong local court natin, ng legal system natin. Iba pa rin yung, ‘okay, divorced ka doon, single ka na.’ Pero dito hindi, so hindi pa siya nag-si-sink in," she added.

Carla also said that she recently learned that the Philippine court recognizes the US divorce decree.

“Siguro mas doon pa siya mag-si-sink in sa akin pag siguro dito na naproseso o dito na naasikaso, at na-recognize na siya ng Philippine court,” she said.

The ex-couple got married in October 2021. Rumors of their breakup started in January when Tom unfollowed Carla on Instagram.

Asked for the reasons for their split, Carla said, “Madami pong dahilan.”
