Dennis Trillo on Jennylyn Mercado: 'Siya rin pala talaga hanggang sa huli'

Dennis Trillo and Jennylyn Mercado’s love story is among the favorites in local showbiz.

It can be remembered that Dennis and Jennylyn first got together in 2010 and then went through a very public breakup nearly a year later. 

In 2014, the couple patched things up again, rode it out steady until seven years later in 2021, when they got engaged, married, and announced they were pregnant.

In April, they welcomed their baby girl Dylan.

In an interview on the “Updated with Nelson Canlas” podcast, the "Maria Clara at Ibarra" actor revealed he was the first one to reach out again to Jennylyn after their breakup. At that time, he was in London for a show.

“Ewan ko, siguro na-miss ko siya o ano. Tinext ko lang, ‘oh kumusta ka na?’ ganyan. Nag-reply naman siya tapos simula nun nagtuloy na ulit yung communication namin dalawa,” Dennis said.

But before they were officially back together, Dennis helped Jennylyn with her album recording sessions. It was after they recorded the song “After All,” Dennis said, “Ayun, nagtuloy-tuloy na ulit kami. Naging kami na ulit.”

According to Dennis, he never expected to get back together with Jennylyn, let alone marry her and have a kid.

“Iyon yung nakakatuwa na nangyari—yung hindi mo aakalain, tapos hindi mo alam siya rin pala talaga hanggang sa huli,” he said.

“Never ko naman na-imagine. Pareho kami — we never imagined na mangyayari ‘to sa mga buhay namin [na] magkakaroon kami ng happy ending. As in hindi pa ending, parang happy start,” he added.

The Kapuso Drama King makes a continued effort to make his wife feel kilig.

“Importante na hindi yun mawawala kasi yun yung nagpapatibay ng relasyon, ng pagpapakita ng affection sa iyong partner, pag-appreciate sa kaniya sa mga ginagawa niya,” he said.

“So ako, tina-try ko na hindi yun mawala dahil ito yung mga importante para mag-build yung strong relationship na 'yon at tumagal pa siya lalo.”

For Dennis, his most recent pa-kilig happened when the family visited him at lock-in taping in Ilocos.

“Ngayon nandito sila sa villa, ilang days na kami dito, siyempre minsan naiinip sila. Ngayon after nito [mamamasyal] kami diyan sa may zoo. Kasi dito sa hotel namin may zoo na malapit so nagpa-schedule na ako ng tour mamaya doon,” Dennis said.

“Mga ganung maliliit na bagay lang na siguraduhin mo na masaya siya palagi, na hindi siya ma-bo-bore. Yung effort na yun, sa tingin ko yun yung kailangan.”

“Hindi ako malaking surprise na tao pero everyday, pinapakita ko kung gaano siya ka-importante sa akin, kung gaano ko siya kamahal at kung gaano ko siya naiisip palagi, silang mag-ina ko kahit nandoon ako sa malayo,” he added.
