Sharon Cuneta looks back on friendship with Cherie Gil, which started in grade school

Sharon Cuneta took her followers down memory lane as she looked back on her friendship with Cherie Gil in a series of Instagram posts.

“Still in deep mourning,” the Megastar said with a photo from their final hangout.

She recalled the time when she first got to know Cherie, which was back when they were in grade school.

“I’ve always looked up to you and idolized you since you were President of our Glee Club in St. Paul Pasig, when you were in 7th grade and I was in 5th,” she said.

“Funny how God brought us together to be partners with the best ‘magkaaway’ chemistry ever on screen. You will always be my partner, no matter how brilliant my coming co-stars shall be,” she added.

Sharon thanked Cherie for their genuine friendship as well as for their time together working on movies.

“Please look after me, love. I told you I wouldn’t know what to do without you… (Yes, I am still in deep mourning. It gets harder and harder nowadays to pretend to be okay and smile and laugh only to go back to crying when I am once again, alone.),” she said.

In another post, Sharon shared the last present she received from Cherie. It was a framed picture of them that Sharon has displayed in their living room ever since she got it.

“And when I opened it, we hugged. That was Cherie. As mataray as she was in her movies, she was as sweet in real life,” Sharon said.

“Our joke was mas mataray nga ako sa kanya di nyo lang alam," she added. “Now all I can do is like Dorina [Sharon’s character in ‘Bituing Walang Ningning,’] I put fresh strands of Sampaguita on her (our) picture everyday…”

Sharon also shared another gift from Cherie, a postcard from Vicenza, Italy with a note from the late actress.

“Kept pristine in one of my planner pockets since 1999,” she said.

Cherie’s death from a rare form of endometrial cancer on August 5 came as a huge shock to the Philippine showbiz industry, and numerous tributes for poured in from fans, fellow artists, and her family.
