3 weeks after his story aired on KMJS, how is the 14-year-old boy from Antique who suffered from a skin condition?
An OFW's child from Tobias Fornier, Antique who has been suffering from a skin condition is now on his way to recovery after his story aired on "Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho."
Daxen's OFW mom, Daylyn, pleaded for help on behalf of her son, whose condition left him with wounds all over his body, blackened nails, and eyes that could no longer close.
Viewers heeded her call and help poured in for the family so that Daxen could get treated at the hospital. After three weeks, his wounds are now healing and he is doing much better.
"Nakakatulog na ako nang maayos. Tapos hindi na masakit 'yung mata ko," he said. "Minsan nagpa-practice na rin akong lumakad para makabilis makauwi."
("I can sleep better now. My eyes also don't hurt anymore. Sometimes I practice walking so I can go home soon.")
Daxen was initially suspected to have ichthyosis, but further test results revealed that he had Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis, a reaction of the body towards certain drugs.
"Sa history ni Daxen meron siyang seizure disorder [Daxen has a history of seizure disorder] and then he was started on an anti-epileptic drug which was phenobarbital. So 'yan ang isa naming tinitingnan na baka nag-cause ng lahat ng ito [That's one of the causes we are looking at]," said Dr. Cynthia Gallinero, an allergist and immunologist.
Gallinero said Daxen has to stay in the hospital for one to two more weeks to complete his medications and follow-up checkups with his doctors.
"Kung wala sa mga tulong ng viewers ng show, si Daxen mamamatay siya [If not for the help of those who were able to watch KMJS, Daxen could have died]," she said.
"Akala ko dati hindi na ako tatagal. Ngayon milagro. Nagpapasalamat ako kay Lord dahil pinagaling Niya ako. Nagpapasalamat ako kasi malaking tulong 'yun kasi nadugtungan 'yung buhay ko," Daxen said.
("I thought I was going to die. Now, I feel like it's a miracle that I'm healing. I thank the Lord because He healed me. I am also thankful for those who helped me.")
Daxen has been under the care of his aunt, Teresita, as his mother Daylyn is working in Singapore. Daylyn worried over her son, but she could only cry herself to sleep every night as she needed to provide for her family.
"Pag tumunog ang cellphone mo, maiisip mo na siguro may masamang balita. Baka pag-uwi ko, hindi ko na siya mayayakap."
("When your phone rings, you start thinking maybe it's bad news. Maybe when I come home, I would no longer be able to hug my son.")
Fortunately, Daylyn's employer kindly offered to pay for her fare to the Philippines so she could see Daxen.
"Nag-uumapaw na saya sa puso ko dahil ito talaga ang hiling ko na makauwi para makita si Daxen. Yayakapin ko at saka hahalikan. Sobrang miss ko na po siya."
["I feel so overwhelmed. I can't wait to see my son. I'd hug him tight. I miss him so much."]
Finally, after being apart for so long, Daylyn was able to reunite with Daxen.
"Masaya ako na nandito ka na. Salamat sa mga sakripisyo n'yo [I am happy now that you are here. Thank you for your sacrifices]," Daxen told his mom.
"I love you, Dax. Akala ko hindi na tayo magkikita. Thanks God kasi umokay ka na [I thought we wouldn't see each other anymore. Thank God because you got better]," Daylyn said.
With Daylyn home, Daxen's physical wounds aren't the only ones healing. Daxen and Daylyn's pain of longing for each other have eased away too.
Daylyn thanked Teresita, her second cousin, for caring for her son. Daxen also expressed his gratitude for his mom and aunt.
"Ma, nagpasalamat ako sa mga paghihirap mo at kapag gumaling ako, magpapakabait ako at susuklian ko lahat ng mga ginawa mo. Sa tita ko po na nag-alaga sa akin, pasalamat ako dahil pinagtiyagaan ako kahit mahirap,"he said.
("Ma, thank you for everything. When I get better, I promise to be good and pay you back for all that you have done for me. To my aunt who cared for me, thank you because you soldiered on even though it's difficult.")
Daxen's hospital bills have reached over P1 million and his treatment is still ongoing. His family still needs some financial assistance for his recovery.
