Ogie Diaz reveals how he told his children that he is gay
It’s no secret that comedian Ogie Diaz is gay, but how did he reveal this to his children?
In Dr. Vicki Belo’s YouTube vlog, Ogie said he didn’t have to talk to them in an intimidating way. He just found the right time to do it when two of his kids encountered some teasing when they were in nursery.
“Nagtatalo yung mga anak ko sa harap ko,” he said, recalling that they were fighting over whether they would tell Ogie what just happened or not.
When Ogie asked them to be honest, his two children said it stemmed from a picture of theirs with him.
“Nagdala si Erin ng picture [naming] tatlo kasi Father’s Day tapos nakita [ng kaklase niya] yung picture [tapos ang sabi], ‘Bakla naman ‘yang daddy mo eh,’” Ogie said.
To which, Ogie said his children tried to tell that classmate of theirs otherwise: “’Hindi bakla daddy ko. Boy [ang] daddy ko.’”
Having known this, the actor said he asked his kids if they cried or got offended by the remark. The kids said they weren’t, so he also took this chance to “indirectly” come out to them.
“’Next time, ‘pag nag-insist sila na bakla (ang) daddy niyo, ‘wag kayong magagalit. Saka kayo magalit ‘pag sinabi na ang daddy niyo (ay) tomboy,’” he recalled telling them.
According to Ogie, his family has been very accepting of his identity ever since, especially his wife of over two decades, Georgette del Rosario.
In fact, he didn’t have to hide it at all from Georgette. They met when he entered a comedy bar for work.
“Kung ako ay tunay na lalaki, hindi ako papatulan niyan. Gusto niya kasi yung lambutin, hindi nagbibihis babae pero bading,” Ogie said.
In the same YouTube interview, Ogie said he had known since he was seven years old that he is gay.
