Married for almost 2 decades now, Tonton Gutierrez shares advice to newlyweds: ‘Enjoy the journey’

Tonton Gutierrez, who has been married to actress Glydel Mercado for almost two decades now, has shared their secret to a long-lasting marriage and gave advice to newlywed couples.

In a “Daig Kayo Ng Lola Ko” press conference on Friday, the veteran actor said it’s important for couples to simply enjoy their journey.

“Enjoy the journey of being married, of married life, especially (because at first there will be) turmoil, adjustment period, but as you go along, you get to know each other,” he said.

“Malalaman niyo na lalabas na ’yung totoong pagkatao ng isa’t-isa.”

[You will learn and the true nature of each other will come out.]

He said the “second stage is when you have children already, you have kids and then that’s the time you really would enjoy married life (because that’s your time) to build a family together (and raise children),” he said.

“I would say just enjoy the journey and put God in the center of the relationship.”

Tonton also said couples shouldn’t feel pressured when it comes to their relationships. It’s also important, he added, for partners to not be mad at the same time.

Whenever he or Glydel would get mad, Tonton said the other would try to remain relaxed so they wouldn’t be angry at the same time.

Another tip he shared was to simply be “friends and cherish the relationship and marriage.”

According to Tonton, he and Glydel have been together for 23 years and married for 17.

The couple have two daughters together, namely Aneeza and Aneeka.

Currently, Tonton is starring on “Daig Kayo ng Lola Ko: It’s Not You, It’s Me” with Pokwang. The show, which airs every Sunday, premiered its first episode on Sunday and will end on Oct. 24. – RC, GMA News
