Claire dela Fuente's son Gigo recalls final moments with singer: 'She was afraid of what was happening to her'
Claire dela Fuente, who passed away on Tuesday after contracting COVID-19, had asked her son Gigo to sleep beside her before she was transferred to the hospital.
The son talked about the final moments he spent with his mom in a virtual interview on ANC.
"I slept beside her because she asked me to, because she was afraid of what was happening to her," he said.
Gigo said his mom seemed to grow nervous and anxious after showing symptoms of COVID-19.
"We both tested positive thru antigen for COVID-19 last Friday and, overnight, she was monitoring her condition and the doctor eventually told her that it would be best that she goes to the hospital so she could be monitored properly because her oxygen was low."
Claire seemed fine and was breathing properly, Gigo said. "My mom didn't have her fever anymore, but she was just nervous and anxious about what was happening to her."
Gigo said his mom felt so fearful that she asked him to stay with her.
"Until the end, she didn't say anything. She did, however, fear death before she left the house and I should have taken it as a sign when she called me and [said]: 'Anak, samahan mo'ko dito sa kuwarto. Kailangan ko ng kasama eh' (Please stay with me here in the room. I need someone with me)," he said.
"So I slept beside her, and in a way, I guess she was slowly saying goodbye," he added.
Claire dela Fuente passed away at the hospital due to cardiac arrest early Tuesday morning.
In an interview with GMA News' Emil Sumangil, Gigo detailed how the singer had to spend days in a COVID-19 facility outside a hospital before she could be admitted.
The Philippines reported 9,296 new COVID-19 cases on Tuesday afternoon, pushing the active cases in the country to 124, 680.
As of the interview on Wednesday morning, Gigo said there was "no chance" he could see his his mother's body. — Margaret Claire Layug/LA, GMA News
