‘MTV Following: Bretman Rock’ addresses gender identity in latest episode: ‘It’s OK to be on your own lane’
“MTV Following: Bretman Rock” addressed issues on gender identity in its latest episode, encouraging viewers to stay true to who they are.
In the fourth episode of the reality show uploaded on Tuesday, Bretman Rock threw a surprise gender reveal party for his cousin Keiffer, often called Miss Kay.
According to Bretman, he wanted his cousin to feel at home after Miss Kay revealed in a previous episode that he sometimes felt left out.
“I’m not transgender. I would consider myself as a drag queen but 24/7. I just want to feel accepted, not hidden,” Miss Kay said in the third episode.
“She deserves all the love in the world. I think we should just give him an environment where he feels like he belongs there,” said Bretman.
Growing up and figuring himself out, Miss Kay said he considered drag an escape that allowed him do his own thing.
“I do not confirm to any labeling in any type of way but me being a woman inside. Drag puts a barrier between the reality and not the reality which gives a boost of confidence,” he said.
“When I get in drag, I feel like no one can stop me,” he added.
With this, Bretman decided on a surprise that’s totally “Keiffer’s vibe.” “There’s no other way of expressing diversity in expression than a drag party.”
During the party, Bretman, his sister Princess Mae, and friend Larry all stated what they loved about Miss Kay. When it was his turn to answer, Miss Kay simply said, “I don’t know.”
“This attention I’m getting right now is very new to me because I’m always in the background where I’m not really in the spotlight. I’m more of the one holding the spotlight for them,” Miss Kay said.
“I just pick on myself a lot. You’re very confident in your own skin. I struggle because I don’t look like you, guys. I try to fit in (but) it’s hard when you feel very different,” he added.
Hearing Miss Kay’s thoughts, Bretman and Larry realized that they should put more effort in “building each other up.”
“Miss Kay is such a beautiful person inside and out but I can tell with her faces that she doesn’t believe us. She definitely makes me feel beautiful so I think it’s my turn to make her feel more beautiful,” Bretman said.
Towards the end of the party, instead of revealing himself as a boy or girl, the balloon showed rainbow colored confetti, symbolizing that no matter what, Miss Kay is a “bad bitch.”
“At the end of the day, no matter what my gender is, all I know is my friends made me feel like I was wanted,” said Miss Kay.
“It’s okay to be on your own lane, it’s okay to not be under other people’s lanes and it’s okay to talk and be out there,” he added.
In an Instagram post, Bretman said this was one of his “favorite episodes” and hoped it would serve as an inspiration for others.
“Episode 4 is one of my favorite [episodes]. Wanted to make one of the most beautiful people I know @_m_kaaay feel comfortable,” Bretman wrote.
“I think this episode is very important for the LGBTQ community and I hope people feel seen on this episode,” he said. – RC, GMA News
