These motorists have given free rides to strangers during lockdown

Several motorists have gone out of their way to give free rides to strangers as public transportation in Metro Manila and other areas is still suspended due to the COVID-19 threat.

According to a report on “Unang Balita” on Wednesday, Caloocan resident Eric Granado had been picking up commuters on his way to work in Makati since Metro Manila was placed under enhanced community quarantine (ECQ).

Using his own car, the company driver was happy to give strangers a ride, especially since many of them were frontliners.

“May nakakasabay ako minsan pati yung mga security guard na nakakasabay ko naglalakad sila, ang layo, all the way from COA to Banawe, lalakad talaga ’yun, maaawa ka na lang talaga,” Eric told GMA News.

The driver wished to continue giving free rides until the public transport situation goes back to normal.

He even posted his phone number on social media so commuters could message him directly.

Another car owner, Ronald Sy, opened his door to a stranger after seeing a man cling onto the rear end of a moving truck just to get to work.

A tricycle driver in Olongapo City also proved that you don’t need a car to help commuters burdened by the lockdown.

Besides driving passengers around on his tricycle for free, Dave Battad also gave away free face masks to people who need it.

“Hindi ko alam kung magkakasakit ako o hindi, basta inisip ko na lang po makatulong ako sa tao na libreng sakay,” the driver said. – Margaret Claire Layug/RC, GMA News
