Megan and Mikael talk about their 'spur of the moment' 2014 engagement

Mikael Daez and Megan Young's wedding shocked the world last weekend but the more surprising news was how they have been engaged since 2014.

In their latest podcast on "Behind Relationship Goals" on Spotify, the Kapuso couple decided to dish out details on their engagement.

Mikael and Megan said it happened on a random insignificant day when they were hanging out at a hotel, talking about commitment.

"We were talking about commitment and somewhere along the lines there. Like you just like stopped and then you stared at me," Megan narrated.

At that point, Megan didn't know what Mikael was thinking. It made her nervous and even thought he was going to break up with her.

"I was like 'Why is he just staring at me? Did I say something wrong? Is he mad at me what's happening?' and then all of a sudden you just go 'Bonez, will you marry me? Will you be my wife?'" Megan narrated.

Megan said she was shocked and turned glassy-eyed and said "yes" to Mikael's question.

Mikael explained out of nowhere the "the urge, the emotion, the desire, to ask the person in front of me, Bonez, to marry me and be my wife kind of overcame me."

He said he decided to act on it because he had the same exact urge and desire when he asked Megan to be her girlfriend at a parking lot in 2011.

"We had an amazing relationship as boyfriend and girlfriend so when I felt it again but this time to ask for her hand in marriage I was like, 'what the heck? Why don't I just act on this impulse again? Because the first time I did it, it went so well for us," he narrated.

Mikael said he was already committed to Megan and that wasn't going to change for him so he couldn't see the reason why he shouldn't act on the urge to ask Megan's hand in marriage.

"I am when I give to someone, I give wholeheartedly and like everything 110% 200% if possible and I didn't want that to change, I had no desire to date other people, date other girls, meet other girls. I was happy with the friends that I have. So I was like why don't I just commit now." Mikael said.

"I was like I want to be a one woman man, I want to have a life with someone that I can grow up with for a very long time, I feel like I have that now, so tara subukan na natin, let's shoot that ball," he added.

Megan said he loved the way Mikael proposed to her without the gimmicks and grand gestures.

"I'm so happy you did it that way because I'm not a fan of gimmicks, grand gestures, so I'm so happy you did it na it was just the both of us because it felt so personal and it felt so us," she said.

Why they kept it a secret

The two decided to keep it a secret because they said they wanted to "enjoy the moment."

Megan said it was "more of our commitment to each other rather than telling people 'OMG we're engaged, we're gonna get married' because we weren't at that point where we wanted to get married na."

Mikael said they didn't feel the urge to tell other people yet because they know it's all about their commitment to each other and telling other people wouldn't add value to that.

Megan and Mikael said they kept it a secret on the first year. On the second year they decided to tell two people: Mikael told his older brother while Megan shared it with her brother Victor, instead of Lauren.

Megan said Lauren found out later when she blurted out by accident. On their third and fourth year of being engaged, they decided to tell their families.

The absence of an engagement ring

At first they decided not to get a ring because Megan wouldn't be able to wear it since they wanted to keep their engagement to themselves.

One day, they decided to get something to represent their commitment to one another. They thought a paire of Rolex watches would be a good idea.

"We were thinking, instead of rings let's just get watches and even like engrave it pa and everything and even though hindi kami mahilig sa watches at least we have a chance to wear it and no one will ever think, oh we're engaged," Megan narrated.

Mikael said getting a Rolex is also sentimental for him because it was his late father's dream to get all of the Daez siblings the watch.

They did their research, found the Rolex models they wanted, but they never really got it. According to Megan, she never felt excited looking at photos of the watches they wanted.

"There were so many days [when] we say tomorrow or today we're gonna get it and it just never happened," Megan said.

They finally decided not to get the watches when they realized it would cost them so much money and they wouldn't be able to wear it all the time.

"Why do we need an object to represent our commitment and love for one another. I think the best way to represent your love and commitment is to actually do it," Mikael said.

After their wedding, Mikael revealed he decided to give Megan a non-traditional ring with a rock that had the color of an iceberg. It was what Megan wanted.

Megan and Mikael had two wedding ceremonies: one in Batangas on January 10 that was attended by just 10 guests, and another on January 25 in San Roque Church in Subic followed by a reception at a ranch. — Jannielyn Ann Bigtas/LA, GMA News
