Inside the fairytale wedding of Anna Maria Perez de Tagle and Scott Douglas Kline, Jr.
Los Angeles — “Tito, I want a princess wedding gown!” Anna Maria Perez de Tagle told fashion designer Oliver Tolentino.
And that was what she got!
Oliver made her a breathtaking princess-like wedding gown with a long train which reminded us of the late Princess Diana’s wedding gown.
Anna Maria or “Wenky” to her family and close friends, 28, is known for her roles as Ashley Dewitt on “Hannah Montana”, Ella Pador on “Camp Rock” and “Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam”, Miracle Ross on “Cake” and Joy Moy in the 2009 remake of the 1980 musical drama, “Fame.”
The charming and very humble daughter of former child actor Artie Perez de Tagle and Evelyn tied the knot with long-time boyfriend aerospace engineer Scott Douglas Kline, Jr., last Saturday, June 29 at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels with close family and friends in attendance.
They got engaged last November 11.
(Scott’s father, Scott Sr. is German-Irish and his mom Maria is Filipina.)
Award-winning actress Uzo Aduba also known as Suzanne “Crazy Eyes” Warren on the Netflix original series “Orange is the New Black” (2013-present) served as Anna Maria’s maid of honor.
The two became close when they worked together in the 2011 Broadway revival of “Godspell” where they were partners on stage together. Anna Maria sang “Day by Day” and Uzo sang “By My Side.”
Oliver and business partner Andrew Caruthers also acted as two of the 16 principal sponsors.
The Gowns
The wedding gown was a long-sleeved off-white layers of silk organza ball gown with full hand-beaded embroidered cascading lace.
According to Oliver, “The gown has thousands of Swarovski crystals and features an 8 ½ meter train and a 10 meter veil. It took 15 people two months to make.”
Anna Maria said of her dream wedding gown, “Oliver and I first collaborated with the design by drawing and sketching it out. I’ve always wanted a big, princess dress with a long train and when he first revealed the finished version, I was in awe. It was literally the dream gown I had always imagined myself walking down the aisle in. I absolutely loved it!”
Oliver created another dress for the bride for the reception: an off-white silk tulle long-sleeved ball gown with fully beaded hand-embroidered bodice in a Baroque style. The embroidered see-through sleeves gave an off-shoulder look.
Oliver, who also dressed the Maid of Honor, Uzo Aduba, described the latter’s gown as “purple silk chiffon hand-draped gown featuring a two-tone bodice.”
The color theme of the wedding was the royal purple, with both mothers dressed by Oliver too.
He said, “Evelyn Perez de Tagle was in a hand-draped purple hombre off-shoulder silk chiffon flowy gown with fully-beaded hand embroidery while Maria Kline, the mother of Scott, was in a darker shade of purple hand-draped silk chiffon gown with hand-beaded embellished bodice and three-fourth sleeves.”
Anna Maria’s grandmother, the legendary Sylvia La Torre, also wore an Oliver Tolentino gown which Oliver described as a “champagne silk chiffon ball gown, embellished with lace and 3-D flowers, with bell sleeves.”
As for the bridesmaids, everyone wore Pia Gladys Perey classic purple designs.
Church Wedding Highlights
One of the highlights of the church wedding was Sylvia La Torre, 86, singing “Ave Maria” to her granddaughter and new grandson when they offered flowers to the Virgin Mary at the Cathedral.
The timeless TV-film-stage-radio performer behind such classic songs as “Waray Waray,” “Alembong,” “Bituing Marikit,” “Sa Kabukiran,” “Mutya ng Pasig,” among others, performed flawlessly and effortlessly with full gusto to the church guests.
Also known as “The Queen of Kundiman,” we still vividly remember Sylvia when she sang with her granddaughter in the 2016 show with the Filipino American Symphony Orchestra (FASO) at the John Wayne Performing Arts Center in Glendale, California under the baton of Maestro Robert “Bob” Shroder. It was a delight to watch both grandma and granddaughter perform with the orchestra.
Sylvia, who was Anna’s first vocal coach, told us in a previous interview, “Like her father Artie, who is also a singer, Anna Maria was very cooperative and was a quick learner. My dream for Anna Maria is for her to be successful in her career as well as to follow my legacy to sing the kundiman.”
As for Anna Maria, she said of her Mamacita’s performance at the wedding, “I always knew I wanted my Lola Sylvia to sing during my wedding. It’s always been a tradition of hers to sing at all of her apo’s weddings. Being the last granddaughter of hers to get married was even more meaningful and special to her because I was the only apo who had a traditional catholic ceremony so it was only fitting for her to sing the Ave Maria. And at 86 years old, she sang it beautifully. It made both Scott and I very emotional.”
In a previous interview, Anna Maria talked about how her grandmother influenced her into becoming the person that she is today and the singer that she has become since her grandmother was her first voice teacher.
“Being my first vocal coach, my grandma instilled in me a lot of tips to become a strong singer like her,” she revealed. “To this day, I still don’t eat ice cream, drink cold drinks and I hardly stay up late. She taught me certain vocal and breathing exercises along with singing vowels to really perfect an operatic tone. Because of my grandma, I’m a very disciplined person not only when it comes to singing and performances but in all aspects of life.
“In that regard, I would consider myself as the ‘mini-me’ of Sylvia La Torre. I’ve learned to protect my voice and to share it with others because it truly is a God-given talent. My ultimate goal is to sing just as good as my grandma when I’m 86 years old as well. She has always been an inspiration to me.”
Another highlight at the wedding was when Anna Maria suddenly pulled out a microphone at the altar and serenaded her groom with “My Heart Belongs to You” with her “Godspell” castmate Eric Krop. It was a truly touching moment as Anna Maria’s clear, crisp, angelic voice reverberated in the majestic walls of the Cathedral.
Reception Highlights
The reception, which was held at the Hilton Glendale, was also filled with emotional speeches from both fathers — Artie Perez De Tagle and Scott Sr. — who both recalled how Anna Maria and Scott were as kids to becoming adults, to finally finding each other and falling in love.
Anna Maria revealed, “Both our fathers are very emotional men and we knew that both speeches would be tear jerkers. However, it was such a surprising and touching moment during Jonathan’s (Best Man and younger brother of Scott) speech as it made everyone in the ballroom misty-eyed.”
Anna Maria and Scott also danced and then began to sing lovingly to each other.
The Day After
We asked Anna Maria to reminisce her Big Day and below are her thoughts and musings:
“Scott and I were moved and overjoyed with everything during our wedding. From the beautiful homily spoken by our priest to the emotional speeches by our fathers during the reception. We were so happy to see all our families, friends and loved ones all come together for our special day.
“It was a night we will cherish and never forget.
“The day after has been very relaxing. We’ve finally taken it all in that we are husband and wife. We can’t wait to start this new journey in life together.”
For their honeymoon, Anna Maria disclosed that they are “going to Barcelona for four days and going on a Mediterranean cruise to Italy, France and parts of Spain as well.”
Career wise, Anna Maria will be next seen as Georgia Morales in the upcoming family movie, “The Message.”
In her private life, though, her fairytale-like story with her real Prince has just began. — LA, GMA News
