Facebook Dating: 9 things you need to know
Now that Facebook Dating has launched in the Philippines, you probably have some burning questions, such as: Will my parents see this?
The answer is no. Read further to learn more about the Dating feature, newly launched across 19 countries, including the Philippines.
1. It's in-app and opt-in
The Dating feature is found within the app, but using it is optional. Facebook users have to explicitly sign up to join the Dating community — and only Facebook users can access the Dating feature, which means a Facebook profile is a prerequisite.
2. You'll need to create a new dedicated profile
Once you've signed up, you'll have to create a Dating profile separate from your existing account. You'll be required to put your real name and age, a measure to prevent catfishing and to inspire authenticity among users.
Catfishing is when you try to lure someone with a fake identity.
3. Matching is based on common interests
Once your account is activated, Facebook Dating will suggest potential matches for you based on your preferences, interests, and things you do in Facebook. You have the option to pass or express your interest by sending a message.
4. It has a separate messaging function from Messenger
Conversations between matches can be found within the Facebook Dating feature. It will not take place in Messenger. The feature also has a message and response system. Users can message potential matches only once; if they respond then it's a match, and they can converse freely.
5. Required location services
To further ensure authenticity, Facebook Dating requires location services at the beginning, to make sure users are where they say they are. They can turn it off after signing up; there is no auto-update feature.
6. You can manage who can see your Dating profile
Inside Dating, only your suggested matches and those to whom you are suggested can see your dating profile. Your current Facebook friends and anyone you blocked on Facebook won't be suggested to you.
Basically, Facebook Dating will only match you with non-friends, and optionally friends of friends (you can turn this on or off in the settings). That means, no, you won't get matched with your dad or uncle.
7. You can opt to use the Secret Crush feature
Facebook Dating's latest feature is its Secret Crush. Normally, you are only matched with non-friends, but the Secret Crush feature allows you to list up to nine crushes among your friends who have opted in Facebook Dating.
If they listed you as a Secret Crush as well, you will be matched.
8. Dating through Events and Groups
Facebook Dating users can choose to see those open to dating in the events they will attend, or common groups they belong to. When you choose to see these people, you will also be visible to them.
9. Live location sharing
If you've matched with someone in Facebook Dating, and you decide to go on a date, Facebook Dating gives you an option to share your location to friends and family to ensure your safety. This feature is unique to Facebook. Users can also choose to send messages to concerned loved ones through the app, although the message will be sent in Messenger.
9. You can easily block someone
If at any point you feel uncomfortable with someone you already matched with, blocking is as simple in Facebook Dating as it is in regular Facebook. — LA, GMA News
