How to scoop up some family time this holiday season
The Yuletide season is all about getting the family together, may it be in the form of a reunion, day out, or getaway. Having real bonding moments, however, may often be disrupted by the presence of gadgets and TV.
Fortunately, this year, Santa has new helpers to spread the Christmas spirit by helping create wonderful memories for the whole family. The Scoops, the animated Selecta ice cream, are on a mission to bring families together. Nervous Neil, Clumsy Colin, Luckless Luke, and Bossy Bessie are ready to help beat such distractions to make the most out of families’ needed quality time this holiday season. Scoop up these tips from the new lovable fun bunch:
Plan a trip together
Nervous Neil may seem a bit jumpy, especially when it comes to unfamiliar territory, but he gets easily excited at the thought of fun activities! He’s much like schoolchildren that look forward to the holidays because of the weeks-long break from attending classes and doing homework.
Cute little Scoop Nervous Neil’s suggestion: plan a trip together. Research shows planning a trip alone can boost one’s happiness. Make it a holiday to remember by going on an out-of-town vacation, which can be more exciting if it’s planned together as a family.
Get everyone on board to make it a getaway of a lifetime: take a survey on where everyone wants to go and what everyone wants to do. Make sure every family member is heard until you reach a consensus on your holiday family vacation.
Decorate as a family
What is the holiday season without putting up the traditional parol outside your house or setting up your family’s Christmas tree?
Take your cue from Bossy Bessie, a natural born leader who takes people’s best interest at heart. Like Bossy Bessie, you can take charge of the Christmas decorating situation by organizing a day dedicated for putting up holiday decor.
Make sure it’s a free day for every family member. Make it more fun by allowing the kids to plan the Christmas look of your household: from the wreath on the door down to the pinecones and crystal snowflakes on the Christmas tree. Encourage their wonderful ideas while guiding them every step of the way. Let decorations abound as you make your home fit for the holidays!
Start a fun Christmas tradition
Even if you don’t know how things will turn out, it’s always fun to start something new—like coming up with an annual family holiday tradition.
Clumsy Colin likes diving head first in any situation even if he’s uncertain of the things to come. Make him an inspiration in thinking of a fun Christmas tradition to start with your family.
You can go caroling in your neighborhood or do a kris kringle with a twist. Avoid limiting yourselves because there are a lot of ideas out there! Don’t be afraid to be like Clumsy Colin and be a larger than life family.
Have a themed gift giving activity
Exchanging gifts is fun, especially if you get what you asked for. There are some instances, however, where at least one member of the group may feel like Luckless Luke, the last of The Scoops that is always out of luck. Despite that, Luckless Luke manages to rise above any situation he finds himself in.
Learn from Luckless Luke to prevent any “luckless” situation from happening in your family gift-giving gathering by organizing one that will help every family member get it right. Go for a themed gift giving activity, as it may narrow down the choices for possible gifts to give to the person assigned to you.
Eat meals together
Family psychologist Brad Sachs says, “Eating together is a fundamental way of creating closeness in the family.” The dinner table is the best way to open conversations and get updates from each other. Make it casual to avoid intimidation among family members.
While the family is together at the dining table, why not extend your conversations over to dessert with scoops of the family favorite Selecta Ice Cream!
