Japan's viral dessert shop Warabimochi Kamakura opens first branch in PH

You don't need to travel abroad to taste one of Japan's most viral desserts.

Warabimochi Kamakura, a globally renowned dessert shop originating in Japan, officially opened its first outpost in the Philippines at SM Megamall on Sunday.

For those not in the know, Warabimochi isn't your typical mochi snack. It's a traditional Japanese snack known for its unique signature silky, jelly-like texture.

Typically dusted with roasted soybean flour (kinako) and paired with a sweet syrup, this snack is a staple in Japanese culture, offering a perfect blend of texture and flavor that's light yet satisfying.

Speaking to GMA News Online, Warabimochi Kamakura general manager Victoria Riingen said she first tried Warabimochi when she was still based in Singapore.

"When I first had it, it was the most delicious thing I've ever tasted in my life," Victoria said.

Moving back to the Philippines, Victoria said she had been craving Warabimochi until an opportunity came for a franchise.

"Just last year, every country in Southeast Asia except Vietnam has reached out to them for a franchise. So within the next year, they'll open in every country in Southeast Asia except in Vietnam," she said.

"So, I was lucky enough to get the franchise for the Philippines," she added.

The dessert brand has over 50 branches all over Japan, and has ventured out in the United States, Hong Kong, South Korea, Australia, Singapore, and now, in the Philippines.

Aside from the Warabimochi original (P480), the store in the country also offers Warabimochi in Matcha flavor (P550).

As for the drinks, Warabimochi Kamakura offers Luxury Strawberry Milk with Warabimochi (P250), Coffee Milk with Warabimochi (P230), and Lemondate with Warabimochi (P230), to name a few.

To celebrate its opening, Warabimochi Kamakura offers a buy-one-get-one promo for Warabimochi drinks, beginning on Sunday until Tuesday.

Warabimochi Kamakura is located at 3F Mega Fashion Hall, SM Megamall, Mandaluyong City.
