Miriam Quiambao looks back on the time she fell on stage in Miss Universe 1999
Miriam Quiambao looked back on the time she fell on stage during the Miss Universe 1999 pageant, where she finished as first runner-up.
On Friday's "Fast Talk with Boy Abunda," the former beauty queen reenacted her fall and shared what really happened during that unpredictable moment.
According to Miriam, she practiced her walk a hundred times a day during her week-long training in Venezuela just to ensure that the moment would be perfect.
"Alam niyo na ang nangyari, di 'ba, something unpredictable, unexpected happened," she shared, adding that her evening gown got longer because of the Swarovski beads placed by the designer.
"'Yung four inch heels ko naapakan 'yung tail ng gown pagdating dun sa bottom ng stairs, so ngayon nadulas ako. Napasigaw ako in my mind, 'oh my god.' Buti na lang, naka-recover ako na para lang akong may pinulot sa floor."
The fall happened fast, and Miriam gracefully recovered from it just as quickly — a moment that drew applause from the crowd and won the hearts of pageant fans.
"It was just so fast pero nag-desisyon ako in my heart, sabi ko tatapusin ko 'yung nasimulan ko. Bangon ako nang ganiyan, tapos ikot ako, aba 'yung buong auditorium pumapalakpak, bibigyan ko sila ng drama," she said.
She also told Tito Boy that people didn't know how nervous she was in that moment.
"Parang isang libong elepante tumatakbo sa puso ko tapos nanginginig 'yung tuhod ko, pero syempre smile," she added.
The host and actress also guested on "Unang Hirit" on Thursday morning ahead of the show's 25th anniversary on December 6.
Miriam looked back on her fond memories as one of the original hosts of the show, including bonding with her co-hosts. She was offered the hosting job while she was in New York after competing in Miss Universe.
She also hosted "Extra Extra" and "Extra Challenge" on GMA-7, and acted in various series and movies.
