Negros Oriental residents receive relief goods through GMA Kapuso Foundation amid Kanlaon unrest

Residents in Canlaon City, Negros Oriental, who are affected by the unrest of Kanlaon Volcano received relief goods from GMA Kapuso Foundation through its Operation Bayanihan project.

According to "24 Oras" on Wednesday, the residents are still reeling from the eruption of Kanlaon Volcano back in June but had no choice but to evacuate because their homes are situated within the four-kilometer danger zone.

Many farmers lost their livelihood after their crops were covered by volcanic ash, made worse by the heavy rains brought on by tropical cyclones Gener, Helen, and the Habagat (Southwest Monsoon).

"Sa ngayon po wala kaming hanapbuhay. Kapag walang ayuda, kumakalam ang sikmura. Nagugutom," said Roselyn, a vegetable dealer.

To provide levity, GMA Kapuso Foundation took to Canlaon City with the 63rd Infantry Batallion of the Philippine Army and distributed relief goods to the residents affected by Kanlaon Volcano's unrest,

Some farmers have also asked for livelihood assistance now that their crops have been damaged.

GMA Kapuso Foundation will soon head to La Castellana in Negros Occidental to deliver aid to other evacuees.

To lend a helping hand through GMA Kapuso Foundation's Operation Bayanihan project, donations may be made via Metrobank, Land Bank, BDO, Bank of Commerce, UnionBank, PNB, Cebuana Lhuillier, GCash, Lazada, and Shopee. Go here for more information.

According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) on Wednesday, five volcanic earthquakes were recorded over Kanlaon Volcano on Tuesday, which is lower in comparison to the 32 volcanic earthquakes observed on Monday.

Alert Level 2 remains over Kanlaon Volcano, which means there is increased unrest and sudden steam-driven or phreatic eruptions may occur.

The volcano emitted 10,880 tons of sulfur dioxide gas on September 12, per PHIVOLCS.
