8,000 Bataan, Cavite residents affected by oil spill receive food packs from GMA Kapuso Foundation
The oil spill brought about by the sinking of the MT Terranova off Limay, Bataan, last July 25 has posed a serious threat to various communities not just in Bataan, but also in the provinces of Cavite, Batangas, and Bulacan, as well as Manila Bay.
These include the fisherfolk communities whose livelihoods have been affected by the disaster just as they were beginning to recover from typhoon Carina and the Habagat.
According to "24 Oras" on Wednesday, the fishermen have lost out on their earnings because they have not been able to go out to sea to fish.
To provide lift to residents whose livelihoods were affected by the oil spill, the GMA Kapuso Foundation recently took to Limay, Bataan and Rosario, Cavite, to deliver some aid.
About 8,000 residents, particularly the fisherfolk, received food packs through the foundation's Operation Bayanihan project.
"Hindi po sila talaga makapalaot para mangisda kaya po naapektuhan po ang kanilang pamumuhay, ganun din po ang suportang binibigay sa kanilang pamilya," said Leila Cruz, barangay captain of Brgy. Lamao in Limay.
To support Operation Bayanihan and more of GMA Kapuso Foundation's projects, donations may be made via Metrobank, Land Bank, BDO, Bank of Commerce, UnionBank, PNB, Cebuana Lhuillier, GCash, Lazada, and Shopee. Go here for more information.
The MT Terranova, en route to Iloilo, was carrying 1.4 million liters of industrial fuel oil when it capsized in the eastern part of the Bataan peninsula back in July.
Fish from areas affected by the Bataan oil spill are now deemed safe for human consumption, except fish from Cavite, the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources said on Tuesday.
