Four 'i-Witness' documentaries to be screened at Cinemalaya 2024

Four award-winning "i-Witness" documentaries will be screened at this year’s Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival.

In a social media post, GMA Public Affairs announced that the documentaries “Sisid sa Putik” of Mav Gonzales and “Boat to School” of Howie Severino will have its Cinemalaya run on Aug. 7 at 11 a.m. at the Ayala Malls Manila Bay Cinema 2.

Meanwhile, Atom Araullo’s “Bawat Barya” and Kara David’s “Ambulasyang de Paa” will be screened on Aug. 8, 11 a.m., at the same venue.

After each screening, a talkback session will be held by David, Araullo, Gonzales and Severino.

The annual film festival is celebrating its 20th year from Aug. 2 to 11 at the Ayala Malls Manila Bay, as well as Greenbelt, Trinoma, U.P. Town Center, and Market Market.

David's "Ambulansyang de Paa" won the George Foster Peabody Award in 2010, whereas Araullo's, Severino's, and Gonzales' documentaries won big at the New York Festivals TV & Film Awards 2024.

"Bawat Barya" bagged a Silver medal in the Documentary: Social Issues category, while "Boat to School" and "Sisid sa Putik" both won Bronze medals each under the Documentary: Heroes and Documentary: Community Portraits categories, respectively.

For Cinemalaya 2024, there are 10 full-length films to look forward to, including the much-awaited “Balota” top billed by Marian Rivera.

Cinemalaya will also be mounting the world premiere of the digitally restored and remastered classic "Jose Rizal," originally produced by GMA Pictures in 1998. This will screen at the Manila Metropolitan Theater (MET) as a tribute to Philippine cinema.

Additionally, GMA Public Affairs' first-ever investigative docu-film, "Lost Sabungeros," will also be part of the film festival. Directed by the award-winning producer Bryan Brazil, "Lost Sabungeros" delves into the unsolved disappearances of sabungeros (cockfighting enthusiasts) in 2022.
