Pets rescued in Manila amid heavy rain, floods

Pets rescued in Manila amid heavy rain, floods

Several pets were among those who got rescued in Manila amid the flooding caused by heavy rainfall due to the Southwest Monsoon enhanced by Typhoon Carina.

As seen in photos posted by the Manila Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office on Wednesday, fur parents took their dogs with them in rescue boats.

Rescuers also carried dogs in their arms as they waddled in waist-deep flood waters.

"We're all inclusive. Ohana… nobody gets left behind," the Manila DRRM Office said on Facebook.

The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) commended the MDRRMO for their rescue efforts.

“Thanks to the rescue team’s kindness and compassion, many dogs survived a harrowing ordeal that endangered their lives,” said PETA Asia senior vice president Jason Baker.

PETA also advised individuals to leave signs on their doors and windows to alert rescue workers to the presence of animals in case a disaster strikes when they’re not home.

The Philippine Animal Welfare Society advised pet owners to prepare an evacuation plan for pets and shared the following tips in case of flood calamities:

  • Prepare an emergency go kit with food, water, first aid kit, medical records, and a list of shelters that allow pets
  • Place pets in a laundry basket or wash basin instead of cages during evacuation
  • If unable to bring the pets, release them from their cages or leashes
