UPFI Film Center to hold free screening of queer films on June 29

The University of the Philippines Film Institute (UPFI) will be holding a free screening of queer films this weekend for members of the LGBTQIA+ and allies.

The "Bakla, Bakla, Paano Ka Lalaya?" film screening will be held on Saturday, June 29, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the UPFI Film Center, UP Diliman campus.

The queer film screening will feature four films, kicking off with Mark Felix Ebreo's "Congratulations, DX!" Rafaela Abucejo's "Saan Ako Pinaglihi?" and Kukay Zinampan's "Nang Maglublob Ako sa Isang Mangkok ng Liwanag."

PJ Raval's "Call Her Ganda" will cap off the screening, which will be followed by a talkback session.

"Congratulations, DX!" follows the story of Dexter, who, after receiving an undetectable HIV status, decides to reconnect with the friends he ghosted for a long time. Meanwhile, "Saan Ako Pinaglihi?" tells the story of an eight-year-old child who is curious about how she was conceived by her two lesbian parents.

Set during pandemic times, "Nang Maglubob Ako sa Isang Mangkok ng Liwanag" is about two friends, Sunshine and Frena, and how they grieve and cope for and with each other throughout a 14-day quarantine period.

The last film, documentary "Call Her Ganda," focuses on the death of Jennifer Laude, the 26-year-old Filipino transgender woman who was slain by U.S. marine Joseph Scott Pemberton in 2014. It follows the journey of the three women who pursued justice for Jennifer, namely activist-lawyer Virgie Suarez, transgender investigative journalist Meredith Talusan, and Jennifer's mother Julita.
