Silvanas named among 50 Best Cookies in the World by Taste Atlas

Silvanas are the lone Philippine cookie that made it to Taste Atlas' 50 Best Cookies in the World list!

Silvanas ranked 25th among 50 global cookies on the Taste Atlas list, with a rating of four out of five stars.

Silvanas or sylvanas are frozen cookies comprising a generous layer of buttercream sandwiched by two cashew-meringue wafers and coated in cashew crumbs. The cookies were described by Taste Atlas as "the snack version of a traditional Filipino dessert known as sans rival." Plain silvanas are the most common, although these also come in flavors like strawberry, chocolate, mocha, and more.

Although enjoyed throughout the Philippines, silvanas are notably popular in Dumaguete among locals and visitors alike, making these the quintessential pasalubong.

Scotland's buttery and dainty petticoat tails took the top spot on the list, while Algeria's melt-in-your-mouth makroud el louse cookies ranked second. Argentina's alfajores, which are sandwich cookies with a dulce de leche stuffing, took the third spot, followed by the Netherlands' stroopwafels, which are cookies with a thin layer of syrup, sugar, butter, and cinnamon sandwiched between two thin wafers. Greece's semolina-based, honey-doused melomakaronas rounded out the top five best cookies in the world.

Taste Atlas is an international online publication that explores the world through local food. It regularly publishes lists of the best foods in various categories, with Philippine dishes and delicacies often ranking on its lists.

In May, the Philippines' lechon, lechon kawali, Bicol express, inihaw na liempo, adobong baboy, and sisig were named among Taste Atlas' 50 Best Pork Dishes. In March, lumpiang shanghai, bibingka, kwek-kwek, taho, and more were also included on its Top 100 list of the best Southeast Asian street foods.

In 2023, leche flan and sinigang figured on Taste Atlas' Top Best Custards in the World and Top 100 Best Dishes in the World lists, respectively.
