9 Works Theatrical to stage 'Once on This Island' in September

"Once on This Island" is coming to the stage this September!

Local theater company 9 Works Theatrical teased the Manila staging of the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical via social media, just as it capped off its "Rent" show over the weekend.

"Making waves soon. Discover the story of a little orphan girl whose life was saved by the gods for something special," 9 Works Theatrical wrote, adding that the show will be in celebration of the company's 15th year.  

The musical, with book and lyrics by Lynn Ahrens and music by Stephen Flaherty, will be directed by Robbie Guevara.

While no specific dates yet have been announced, "Once on This Island" will be staged at the RCBC Plaza in Makati City.

"Once on This Island" tells the story of star-crossed lovers Ti Moune and Daniel Beauxhomme, and the class differences that stand in the way of their love. It is based on Rosa Guy's 1985 novel "My Love, My Love" or "The Peasant Girl," which is a Caribbean reimagining of Hans Christian Andersen's "The Little Mermaid."

In the past, 9 Works Theatrical has staged other award-winning musicals, including "Grease," "La Cage aux Folles," and "Tick, Tick... Boom!" among many others.

Tony Award-winning singer and and actress Lea Salonga earned a Grammy nomination for Best Musical Theater Album alongside the cast of the Broadway production of "Once on This Island" back in 2018. Lea played the role of Erzulie, the Goddess of Love, in the musical.
