Shiba Inu behind famous 'doge' meme passes away
Kabosu, the Shiba Inu behind the famous "doge" meme, has passed away, her owner Atsuko Sato announced.
On Instagram, Sato shared that Kabosu had crossed the rainbow bridge on Friday morning.
"She went very peacefully without suffering, as if falling asleep while feeling the warmth of my hands petting her," Sato wrote.
She also thanked all of the people who loved Kabosu, adding, "I am certain that Kabosu was the happiest dog in the world. That makes me the happiest owner in the world."
Kabosu was 18 years old at the time of her passing.
The adorable Shiba Inu took social media by storm in the early 2010s after her photo resting upon a sofa populated internet memes. The "doge" meme includes an image of Kabosu or a dog of the Shiba Inu breed along with intentionally misspelled words and grammatically incorrect phrases.
Kabosu also inspired "Dogecoin," the first-ever meme coin and dog coin.
Sato adopted Kabosu in November 2008 after visiting an animal shelter. Kabosu was previously rescued from a puppy mill and was scheduled to be euthanized by the shelter when Sato met her.
Aside from Kabosu, Sato also has three rescue cats.
Rest in peace, Kabosu.
