Extreme heat leaves pets, livestock, zoo animals in danger
The extreme heat index that the Philippines is experiencing these days does not only affect humans, but also pets, livestock, and zoo animals.
As seen in Vonne Aquino's report on "24 Oras Weekend" Sunday, some of the pet dogs in Aglipay, Quirino have started to grow weaker and experience coughs and colds. A fur parent also lost his pet dog due to the extreme heat.
"Noong unang makita ko sir nakababa 'yung buntot niya na naglalakad na parang hilo na naglalaway tapos dalawang araw ay nahiga na 'yung aso sir," said barangay captain Dante Rigor.
"Tapos nagtatahol tahol na sir na parang nagmamakaawa na siya tapos pangatlo, pang-apat na araw namatay na."
When it comes to livestock animals, some farmers were forced to sell their cows because the rivers and streams where their cows get their food and drink water were slowly drying up.
Meanwhile at a sanctuary zoo in Pililia, Rizal, the trees have become a big help to cool down their zoo animals.
According to the report, ever since the heat intensified, zookeepers make sure to bathe the animals twice a day. They also mist waters in the animal cages to supply waters to the birds, lion, tiger, horses, pig and any other animals inhabiting the zoo.
To ensure the animals' safety, animal sanctuary's Operation Head Marvin Que said that they always make sure that their water is always full. They also provide vitamins to the animals and have them checked up twice a month.
