GMA Integrated News’ Zay Arguelles chosen to join City University of New York's AI journalism lab
Zay Arguelles of GMA Integrated News Digital Strategy and Innovation Lab is among the 25 journalists, media leaders, academåics, and artificial intelligence practitioners chosen to be part of the inaugural cohort of the AI Journalism Lab at the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism of the City University of New York (CUNY).
According to the CUNY website, “These individuals are finding ways to navigate and harness generative AI in ethical ways that reinforce trust from communities and increase impact for their news organizations and the larger media industry.”
“Their diverse perspectives and expertise will undoubtedly shape the future of AI-powered journalism, inspiring impactful change within our industry," program lead Nikita Roy said,
The journalists will also learn about the potential of AI and how it may help operations by maximizing efficiency.
Arguelles works as the Acting Supervising Producer for GMA Integrated News Digital Strategy and Innovation Lab (DigiLab). She also works as the Executive Producer for the digital documentary program “DigiDokyu” and is a Climate Change Communications Specialist and Innovation Lead.
Aside from these roles, Arguelles manages internal collaborations and external partnerships.
Arguelles is the only participant from the Philippines. She graduated with a journalism degree from the City University of London in 2015, where she was able to study humanitarian reporting and international news. Arguelles is trained in digital and social media, and can work on different multimedia platforms.The Filipino-British journalist is also a foodie and an avid reader.
The AI Journalism Lab will run from April 26 to June 28. After a summer break, it will resume on September 27 to October 11. It will be held virtually except for a physical kick-off event at the Newmark J-School in New York on May 3 to 4. —Nika Roque/JCB, GMA Integrated News
