'ERE,' 'Kung Wala Ka,' 'ikaw at sila:' Here are 10 OPM songs to help get you through a breakup
Going through a breakup also means experiencing the most intense emotions, often all at once.
There's that anger, grief, frustration, and misery of losing somebody who was once so special to you, but there's also that sense of new freedom and motivation to start all over again with the lessons you've learned from the relationship. And nothing quite beats the feeling of listening to Filipino songs that just get it.
Here are 10 OPM songs to help you express those feelings of going through a breakup:
1. 'Pwede Ba' by Lola Amour
Before they made Filipinos know every lyric to "Raining in Manila," Lola Amour made waves with "Pwede Ba."
Although it is a lively pop song, "Pwede Ba" opens up about what it's like to give up on a relationship following conflicts, and thinking that they should just pretend that everything is OK to still be able to save what they have.
Oh bakit ba? Pwede bang magkunyari na lang tayo?"
2. 'ERE' by Juan Karlos
"ERE" by Juan Karlos is definitely making itself known as a breakup classic in OPM.
With all its curse words and strong melodies, Juan Karlos perfectly captured the anger that happens in breakups. He sang about giving it his all in the relationship, but was still left behind by his partner because of all their doubts.
Relatable lyrics: "Oh, di ba? Nakakap***** ***. Tayo'y lumilipad, at ako'y iniwan mo."
3. 'Orbiting' by Reese Lansangan
Sometimes, what hurts the most about relationships is looking back at your memories together.
In "Orbiting," Reese Lansangan reflects on whether what they had was real and if it ever meant something to her former partner.
The song also tackles situationships, all about being companions to each other, but never quite making it into love.
Relatable lyrics: "Are we gonna pretend that nothing happened in the end? I'm wondering if we ever came close to more than just friends. Is this how you and I both end, forever orbiting each other and yet, never quite colliding into love?"
4. 'Ikaw at Sila' by Moira Dela Torre
"Ikaw at Sila" is Moira Dela Torre's heartbreaking single, which came out after her split with ex-husband Jason Marvin.
The tear-jerking ballad shows what it's like to be hurt and lost after a relationship, and also seeing your ex with someone else.
5. 'tyl' by kakie
Frankie Pangilinan, or Kakie in the music industry, showcased her songwriting talent with "tyl," which was produced by OPM legend Ely Buendia.
In the song, Kakie speaks to the boy she lost, whom she thought she would spend the rest of her life with as "true young lovers."
Relatable lyrics: "Maybe your promises drowned out all those other noises. Convinced me we'd last forever. We were crazy true young lovers."
6. 'Kung Wala Ka' by Hale
Hale's "Kung Wala Ka" may have been released 20 years ago, but it remains a breakup classic.
The rock song encapsulates what it's like to already have a future planned out with a special someone, and then lose all of that.
7. 'Umaasa' by Calein
Calein's "Umaasa" is another one of those songs that just hit the spot.
The band looks at how you end up getting hurt and down even after giving the person all your love.
8. 'Dating Tayo' by TJ Monterde
TJ Monterde's ballad, "Dating Tayo," will bring you back to past memories.
The singer wishes that they could go back to the way things were, back when they were happy instead of being back to two individual people who are no longer together.
9. 'Pagsamo' by Arthur Nery
"Pagsamo" by Arthur Nery is a different kind of heartbreak.
The singer pleads to his partner to give him a chance, but with the person not feeling the same way as well as the timing of life, the relationship would just not work.
Its accompanying music video also shows that heartbreak of how someone could mean so much to you, only for that person to end up as being somebody you know.
10. 'Never' by UDD
When relationships end, the people involved will never be the same ones they used to be.
In UDD's "Never," there's the feeling of being hurt over what happened and the isolation of heartbreak, but still knowing that you can heal, move on, and get stronger after a breakup.
Relatable lyrics: "Though I know I'm not myself yet, I'll get there somehow. No, I don't need your help. I've been alone this whole time."
