Manila Luzon wins Best Entertainment Host at Asian Academy Creative Awards
Manila Luzon was named Best Entertainment Host for her work on “Drag Den Philippines” at the Asian Academy Creative Awards in Singapore on Thursday.
Manila appeared in a black gown that had an intricately beaded top and a front slit, her signature white streaked-black hair ever present.
The Filipino-American drag artist went up against presenters from Australia, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, and Singapore. Manila was deemed the winner with a score of 19 over 20.
Upon accepting her award, Manila yelled out “Philippines!” while holding her trophy.
“Well, I guess have to change my name from Manila Luzon to Manila Winzon,” she said.
An emotional Manila—who said she “had never won anything in my life”— thanked her husband Michael Alvarez, the award-giving body, series creator Rod Singh, the show’s producers, Drag Cartel Sassa Gurl and Nicole Cordoves, and mentioned each of the queens of “Drag Den” season one. Rod, Aries Night, and Sassa Gurl were also present at the awards ceremony.
“They are the stars of our show,” Manila said.
“Thank you queens for making the risk to be on our show and to be the first drag queens to put yourself and your artistry out there on Filipino TV for all of Asia and the world to watch,” she added.
Manila added that she is “so blessed” to witness the “best drag show in the world!”
Before ending her speech, the “RuPaul’s Drag Race” alum quipped, “I think this trophy will make a fabulous earring.”
“Salamat pose!”
Renewed for a second season, “Drag Den Philippines” will begin streaming exclusively on Amazon Prime Video on January 18.
Like the first season, it will feature 10 competing queens — Deja, Elvira, Feyvah Fatale, Jean Vilogue, Margaux, Maria Lava, Marlyn, Moi, Mrs Tan, and Russia Fox — a new den and a new set of rules.
This time around, "Drag Den Philippines" will also stream in more than 240 countries and territories worldwide.
Earlier this week, the show dropped a teaser for the upcoming season, which promises something futuristic.
Naia was named the ultimate Drag Supreme in the series’ first season.
Congratulations Manila Luzon! All together now: Yaas, queen!
