No need for 'Finsta': Instagram rolls out Close Friends feature on posts, reels

There's no need for "Finsta" (Fake Insta) now that Instagram has expanded its Close Friends feature to the main feed posts and reels.

The Close Friends feature was originally for Instagram Stories only, which has been available since 2018. It lets you create a smaller follower list who can view your stories. As the name suggests, this list would contain your "Close Friends" or those whom you're comfortable seeing what you post.

This week, Instagram has added the Close Friends feature to the main feed's posts and reels.

Here's how it works: Once your Instagram is updated, before sharing a post or a reel, you will have the option to select the audience of your post in the Audience tab, where you can opt for everyone on your follower's list or your close friends.

"Finsta" rose to fame in 2021, but the term has been around since 2015. It's short for "Fake Insta," where people dump their non-curated and non-aesthetic posts intended for their real-life close friends. Basically, it's a less-edited version of someone's Instagram account.

In July, Instagram launched Threads, a separate app with the premise of "sharing text updates and joining public conversations."
