'Drag Race PH:' M1ss Jade So recalls being unable to go to prom for wearing white dress
M1ss Jade So, one of the finalists of "Drag Race Philippines," opened up about her struggles growing up as a transgender person.
In the ninth episode of "Drag Race Philippines," which aired on Wednesday night, Jade explained the inspiration for her "Doble Kara Extravaganza" look, which was an ode to her high school prom look.
"My Doble Kara look is very personal to me. I was once told that I [needed] to wear a suit or anything as 'pang lalaki' just so I could enter my high school prom," she said.
"I came to the event wearing a white cocktail dress, but they didn't let me in," she added.
According to the drag queen, she explained the concept of trans to the school staff during their prom, but she was still not given access.
"In-explain ko 'yung concept ng trans and sana matanggap nila kahit isang pagkakataon lang sa buhay ko na mairampa ko 'yung sarili ko na hindi ako nakapanglalaki na uniform," Jade recalled.
"My mom was explaining to them na 'babae po 'yung anak ko, payagan niyo po sana kahit hanggang midnight lang sana' pero they still didn't let me in," she added.
In the end, Jade said she stayed outside the prom venue until the event ended.
"As a protest, I didn't go home, nag-stay ako that night tapos may isang teacher na nag-stay with me the whole night sa labas," Jade said, turning emotional.
Jade then thanked the teacher who stood by her during such a challenging moment in her life as a trans.
"Thank you for standing with me as part of my protest for fighting for my rights," she said, addressing her teacher.
Jade may be unable to attend her high school prom, but she said "Drag Race Philippines" is her "redeeming moment."
"Hindi man ako nanalong prom queen, alam ko sa sarili ko na this is my redeeming moment, this is my glow-up," she ended.
At a Bekenemen viewing party on Wednesday night, Jade's mom was present and expressed her full support to Jade.
"Thank you po at naging ganito si Jade, proud ako sa kanya. Love na love ko siya," Jade's mom said.
"Lahat ng gastos sa 'min 'yan," she added, making the crowd laugh out of joy.
The season finale of "Drag Race Philippines" is set to air on HBO Go and Wow Presents Plus on October 4.
