GMA Kapuso Foundation to build 4 classrooms in Odette-hit school in Surigao del Norte
GMA Kapuso Foundation is set to build four new classrooms for Baybay Elementary School in Burgos, Surigao del Norte, which was hit by Typhoon Odette in 2021.
According to a “24 Oras” report Wednesday, among those who sought shelter at the school during the typhoon was student Althea Joy Mendoza, who hid in one of the damaged bathrooms.
“Doon kami nagtago sa CR ng school kasi may nagliliparang yero po. Iyong mga tao po, nagsisigawan,” she said.
[We hid in the school’s toilet because of flying metal sheets. The people were screaming.]
Now that face-to-face classes are back, students and faculty members are learning at the gymnasium while the classrooms are still damaged. Althea hopes they can study in a better environment soon.
The GMA Kapuso Foundation had a groundbreaking ceremony for the four classrooms, which could survive strong winds and intensity 8 earthquake.
“Mga walls ng classroom natin ay solid na semento. Hindi tayo gumagamit ng kahoy sa mga kisame,” said GMA Kapuso Foundation senior project engineer Edgar Eniego.
[The walls are solid concrete. We don’t use wood for the ceiling.]
The project was made possible with the help of donors, the Philippine Army, Concrete Stone Corp., Apex Mining Co. Inc., and the New Zealand Embassy Manila.
“Ang Burgos ay isa sa pinakanasalanta ng Bagyong Odette dahil talagang kaharap sila ng dagat, so umaasa tayo na marami talaga tayong mga batang matutulungan sa pagtayo ng school natin,” said Rikki Escudero-Catibog, GMA Kapuso Foundation EVP/COO.
[Burgos is one of those places badly affected by Typhoon Odette because it faces the ocean. We hope to help many children with the building of the school.]
GMA Kapuso Foundation is accepting donations through bank deposits, Cebuana Lhuillier, GCash, Shopee, PayMaya, Zalora, MegaMart, Globe Rewards, Metrobank credit card, and Lazada.
