Marc Pingris recalls sleeping at market in Pozorrubio, Pangasinan, during his childhood
As Marc Pingris returned to his hometown in Pozorrubio, Pangasinan, on “Biyahe ni Drew,” the former PBA player shared how he used to sleep at the market during his childhood.
“Dito ako natutulog dati ng family ko and dito rin nagbebenta ng mga prutas before,” Marc pointed out to host Drew Arellano when they visited the market.
[I used to sleep here with my family and we sold fruits here.]
Marc said his mother sold fruits while he helped out in the operations of the store.
“Gigising ako ng 5 in the morning, mula sa labas, binubuhat namin isang sako ng pakwan tapos nilalagay namin sa puwesto namin,” he said.
[I would wake up at 5 in the morning and from outside, we would carry a sack of watermelons and put it in our stall.]
The former PBA player also recalled he was tagged as “Kano ng Pozorrubio” because of his skin color, and admitted he was sometimes bullied because of it.
“Sometimes kasi it’s good, kumbaga kilala ka agad. ’Pag sinabing ‘Kano,’ elite. But hindi natin matatanggal diyan iyong may mga bully talaga na sinasabing ampon lang daw ako dahil ako iyong maputi,” he said.
[Sometimes it’s good because you become easily known. When they say ‘Kano,’ it sounds elite. But there were also bullies who said I was adopted because I was white.]
“Kaya lagi akong nasa principal’s office before dahil maraming nasusuntok,” said Marc.
[I was always in the principal’s office before because I had punched a lot of people.]
However, he said that his mom would always be his source of strength and inspiration despite the adversities.
