KUYA KIM, ANO NA?

How paragliders get up and stay high

Paragliding has long been a known recreational sport and activity among adventurous types of people, but have you ever wondered how the paraglider is able to stay in the air for long?

According to Kuya Kim on “24 Oras” report Monday, physicist Harlee Quizzagan said it's all about air and the lift it gives.

It starts off when a pilot gets force while located in a high takeoff point to make the lightweight canopy called the paraglider fly.

“Ito yung tinatawag nating lift. Nag-gegenerate siya ng force na i-lift ka pataas against gravity. ‘Pag nasa range ka ng mountain, may mga paakyat diyan na hangin. You can use that as a source lift,” Quizzagan said.

Compared to a parachute, a paraglider’s sail is designed to stay on top like an airplane’s wings, but each pilot should still have a backup parachute on its harness.

Among the famous paragliding places in the Philippines include Landingan Viewpoint in Quirino and Mt. Riwata in Cardona, Rizal. —Franchesca Viernes/NB, GMA News
