Students invent trash-collecting bike to help street sweepers
Engineering students from the Technological Institute of the Philippine have invented a pedal-operated road sweeper that picks up and collects trash on the ground.
According to a report by GMA Digital, Louise Altez and his friends Ceejei, Dennis, and Jasper want their thesis project to help the unsung heroes of the road — street sweepers.
"We noticed that road sweepers wake up as early as 6 a.m. So we thought, why not apply what we’ve seen from their jobs to our design?" Louise said.
"So that has been our main purpose: To help road sweepers. To make their jobs easier with less effort," she added.
Both emission free and budget-friendly, the pedal-operated road sweeper was built from an old bike and welded steel sheets.
It was built with a cylindrical broom that picks up trash and deposits it into a removable bin attached to the back.
While their sustainable and replicable invention fetched tons of praise online, the engineering students said their project could always use some improvement.
“If ever, in the near future, we’re given the chance to get our thesis funded, we’ll do our best to improve the project and maximize the opportunity to show our skills," Louise said.
The group of friends said they also made sure to work as a team since they all shared the same dream to become engineers one day.
