Why is it important to have New Year's Resolutions? Sociologist answers

Many people around the world look forward to the new year with their eye on progress—whether in the form wishes or pledges for self -improvement.

In this time of pandemic, a sociologist said New Year's Resolutions are ever more important to keep everyone going despite all the hardships.

"If we lose our sense of hope in this pandemic, we will all lose our sanity," Bro. Clifford Sorita said in Dano Tingcungco's report on "24 Oras."

According to Sorita, expressing New Year's Resolutions become our motivation to wake up every day and push on towards the future.

"A wish is an echo of hope. Kapag vino-vocalize mo 'yung wishes mo for the new year, parang binibigyan mo ng motivation ang wish. Ang problema kasi kapag wishful thinking lang, wala lang," he said.

One of his suggestions is to write or  draw the resolutions and display them somewhere we can see so we do not forget them.

Another thing is to look for a resolution buddy who will motivate us when we are having doubts about ourselves.

Sorita also reminded everyone that change do not have to be big at once and we can take it one step at a time.

"The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step, therefore the smaller the steps, small increments, at the end of the year, becomes one big change."
