What's the story behind Rabiya Mateo's name?
Looks like Miss Universe Philippines 2020 Rabiya Mateo has been royalty since birth!
The Half-Indian beauty queen from Iloilo just revealed the origins of her unique first name in a recent vlog.
Apparently, "Rabiya" means "queen" or "princess" in her father's language, and she was given the name for being the first daughter her family has had in a long time.
"On my daddy's side, he had two brothers — I was the first girl, so they wanted to give me the name 'princess,'" she said in FIlipino.
"[My daddy said] we should name her 'Rabiya' which means queen or princess in their language," she added.
Rabiya also shared the fun fact that she was almost named "Jasmine," because her mom was a big fan of the Disney movie "Aladdin."
In a twist of fate, Rabiya Mateo was crowned Miss Universe Philippines in October 2019, and represented the country at the global Miss Universe pageant in Florida in May this year.
The crown went to Mexico's Andrea Meza, but Rabiya made the country super proud by making it as one of the competition's Top 21 finalists. —Margaret Claire Layug/JCB, GMA News
