Kabang the hero dog laid to rest

The heroic dog Kabang was finally laid to rest yesterday.

According to an update on its Facebook page Thursday, the concrete vault bearing the animal’s remains was lowered at 2 p.m.

Attending the ceremonies were Zamboanga City Mayor Beng Climaco and veterinarian Dr. Anton Lim.

The announcement said the Zamboanga City Sangguniang Panglunsod Resolution No. 699 s. 2021, which pinpointed the exact site for the memorial site, had been passed unanimously.

“With that, the construction of a memorial (with) a 400 kg solid aluminum statue made by Davao-based Kublai Millan can now commence,” it added.

Kabang passed away on May 17.

It became famous in 2011 when it leapt in front of a speeding motorcycle on a busy road to save two young girls, the daughter of its owner and her cousin.

The dog’s face got mangled but it survived the accident.

When Kabang’s story became viral, an online fundraising drive spearheaded by New York-based nurse Karen Kenngott raised more than $20,000 for its treatment in the US.

Doctors were unable to completely rebuild the dog’s face but managed to protect it from infection that could have endangered its life. — RC, GMA News
