Miss South Africa cries over Miss Universe loss after country's 3-year winning streak
Miss Universe South Africa Natasha Joubert turned emotional days after her loss at the prestigious pageant.
In an Instagram live session, she gamely answered questions from fans and got teary-eyed at the supportive messages and "lovely" comments.
While she said she's doing well, she admitted that she's "quite emotional."
"I have done everything I could, I gave my best, I showed 110 percent, I've learned so much about myself. I've given everything I could," she said.
Joubert exited the 69th Miss Universe competition early after failing to place in the Top 21.
The development was shocking to many pageant enthusiasts who had named her as one of the strongest contenders for the crown.
"It was hard to accept," Joubert said. "It wasn’t something I expected. I’m still trying to understand, and there's obviously not a certain answer I’m going to get at this moment."
She took the loss even harder considering that South Africa had a three-year winning streak. Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters won the crown in 2017; Tamaryn Green won 1st Runner-Up in 2018; Zozibini Tunzi was named Miss Universe 2019.
"It was extremely hard standing there, knowing that South Africa did so well for three years," Joubert said.
"But I gave everything. I'm proud of myself for standing there. I overcame so many things that I’ve struggled with for such a long time," she added.
She also said that she still thought the whole experience was "amazing."
"I actually learned how to embrace my vulnerability, how to put myself out there regardless of what the outcome is," she said.
"I have to accept that I've put myself out there, and that was more than enough. In five years time, I will understand why. I will understand why things didn’t work out like I wanted it to," she added.
The Miss Universe crown went to Andrea Meza of Mexico during the grand coronation night held in Hollywood, Florida on Monday.
Philippine bet Rabiya Mateo likewise bowed out of the pageant early as one of the Top 21 finalists. —JCB, GMA News
