Miss Singapore says ‘stop Asian hate’ at Miss Universe national costume competition
Miss Singapore 2020 Bernadette Belle Ong just used the Miss Universe stage to say, “stop Asian hate.”
The proudly Asian beauty made a statement at the pageant’s national costume event on Friday in a sparkly red bodysuit paired with a flowy cape that revealed the words as she turned around.
According to the announcers, the red color in Belle’s outfit represents “equality for all,” while the white symbolizes “everlasting virtues.”
The costume was also introduced with a message: “Singapore is a place for all races and they are very proud to be Asian.”
The 2020 Miss Universe stage saw plenty of impactful national costumes.
Miss Myanmar Thuzar Wint Lwin, whose original national costume was “lost in the mail,” used her airtime to ask viewers all around the world to “pray for Myanmar.”
Miss Canada Nova Stevens wore a superhero outfit to symbolize racial equality, while Miss Israel Tehila Levi wore an “after COVID-19” themed dress made of face masks to represent “hope for a brighter future where masks are no longer necessary.”
The Philippines’ very own Rabiya Mateo wore a massive costume inspired by the Philippine flag, with the blue color representing royalty, red for the courage and strength of an independent woman, and yellow for the color of the sun and stars.
The national costume round of the 2020 Miss Universe pageant is streaming live through Lazada and the official Miss Universe YouTube channel.
