Netflix orders live-action ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ from original creators
The harmony of the world seems off recently and it looks like Netflix will try to bring balance back with a live-action adaptation of "Avatar: The Last Airbender."
"Avatar", praised for its deft handling of the tenets of several Asian philosophies, will return to the small screen with the guidance of the original creators Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko.
The pair will now serve as showrunners and executive producers for the new Netflix series. According to a report by Variety, the show begins production in 2019.
"Avatar" was first adapted by M. Night Shyamalan in 2010. The significant change in the tone and the lack of diversity in the movie was met with overwhelmingly negative reactions from fans and critics alike.
In a statement published in Variety, DiMartino and Konietzko said that they are grateful to have the opportunity to create a live-action version that will preserve their vision:
We’re thrilled for the opportunity to helm this live-action adaptation of ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender.'
We can’t wait to realize Aang’s world as cinematically as we always imagined it to be, and with a culturally appropriate, non-whitewashed cast. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime chance to build upon everyone’s great work on the original animated series and go even deeper into the characters, story, action, and world-building.
Netflix is wholly dedicated to manifesting our vision for this retelling, and we’re incredibly grateful to be partnering with them.
“Avatar: The Last Airbender” aired for three seasons on Nickelodeon from February 2005 to July 2008. It went on to win several awards, including a Primetime Emmy Award and a Peabody Award. — Aya Tantiangco, GMA News
