Thailand to host Miss Universe 2018

Miss Universe 2017 Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters will be crowning her successor in the Land of Smiles.

The Sash Factor on Instagram Tuesday announced that the 67th Miss Universe pageant will be held in Thailand in December.

Philippine bet, Catriona Gray also confirmed the rumors on her social media accounts. "Sawasdee Ka Thailand! Soooo excited that the rumors are true and that it's finally official!!! @missuniverse to be held in Thailand, December 2018," read a portion of her caption.

Thailand has hosted the pageant twice, first in 1992 and again in 2005. The country is home to two Miss Universe titleholders, Apasra Hongsakula (1965) and Porntip Nakhirunkanok (1988).

The Philippines was pegged as a possible host, but the negotiations were cut short after a change in leadership in the Department of Tourism.

The 67th Miss Universe currently marks the debut of three countries, namely
Armenia, Kyrgyzstan, and Mongolia.

It may also be the first Miss Universe where a trans beauty queen, Miss Universe Spain 2018 Angela Ponce, walks the stage. — Aya Tantiangco/LA, GMA News
