Why didn't Rachel Peters make it to the Top 5?
Philippine bet Rachel Peters ended her journey early at Miss Universe 2017 on Monday morning, finishing her stint at the Top 10.
Kara David on News To Go interviewed GMA News Stringer Peterson Gonzaga, who said that "Peters' story package" may have been a factor to her loss.
"Maraming nag-scream and shout. They were like surprised, even dito sa media room, they were surprised. Lahat dito, we're trying to figure out what happened. Some [are saying] it's her story package or maybe her personality wasn't that strong, although she has a good heart," Gonzaga said.
He added that Peters was an early favorite, "from the preliminaries to the national costume, even mga different lahi, they were like rooting for Miss Peters. She didn't get to the top 5 or top 3, but everybody's just happy that she was here, that she's representing," he said.
Gonzaga compared our Rachel to South Africa's Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters, who ultimately won the pageant.
Says Gonzaga, though Demi-Leigh is one of the smallest candidates standing 5'7'' tall, her background story of pulling through a carjack incident was her strongest edge for winning the pageant.
"I think baka kasi, even though she's maliit, her background story, she was carjacked and she fought back, baka 'yung story niya is very strong. That's what some of the judges are looking at — the personality, the story, the background of their life, baka 'yun; that might [have] hindered the Philippines."
During the Q&A, Demi-Leigh was asked "what quality in yourself are you most proud of and how will you apply that quality to your time as Miss Universe?"
Demi-Leigh answered: "As Miss Universe, you have to be confident in who you are as an individual. A Miss Universe is a woman who has overcome many fears and by that, she is able to help other women overcome their fears. She is a woman that nothing is ever too much to ask for. And I think that is exactly who I am."
The 22-year-old South African beauty queen is a Business Management graduate, who has also developed a program that trains women in self-defense.
