Imee Marcos' son marries granddaughter of ‘political rival’

The grandchildren of 1965 presidential candidates and political rivals Ferdinand Marcos and Raul Manglapus got married last Wednesday in a private ceremony in Makati City.

The wedding was followed by a "bales," a traditional celebration held when an Ilocano couple gets married outside of their hometown, on Saturday at the San Agustin Church in Paoay, Ilocos Norte.

Among the wedding's principal sponsors was President Rodrigo Duterte's daughter, Davao City Mayor Inday Sara Duterte-Carpio.

Marcos Sr.'s grandson, Lawyer Michael Ferdinand Manotoc, is the second among the three sons of Ilocos Norte Governor Imee Marcos while the bride, Carina Amelia Manglapus, is the granddaughter of the opposition candidate who went on exile to the US during the martial law years after losing the presidency to Marcos Sr.

Manglapus later founded the Movement for Free Philippines (MFP), which fought the Marcos regime and stood alongside the late strongman's opposition leaders Benigno "Ninoy" Aquino Jr. and Jose Diokno.

After Marcos passed away in Hawaii during his own exile in 1989, Manglapus was reportedly among those who opposed the return of his remains to the country.

Michael and Carina maintained their relationship despite the long history of the Marcos-Manglapus "feud."

The pair had a baby girl named Amelia Margarita "Mia" last March 2016.

The two met in 2014 at the wedding of Marcos Sr.'s grandson, Luis Marcos-Araneta, where Carina was a guest of the bride, Xandra Rocha.

Michael passed the bar exam in 2014 after graduating from the University of the Philippines College of Law while Carina has a career in singing and music after finishing a creative writing degree from the Ateneo de Manila University. —Margaret Claire Layug/ALG, GMA News
