Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles getting rebooted into 2D animated series

“Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” is getting rebooted again—and this time, it’s going back to its roots as a 2D animated series.

Nickelodeon recently announced that it is developing a 2D animated series entitled “Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.” The 26-episode first season premieres in 2018 fall.

“The Turtles is a property that has reinvention in its DNA, which keeps it fresh and relevant to every new generation while satisfying the demand from its adult fans,” stated Nickelodeon Group president, Cyma Zarghami. “‘Turtles’ has been an incredibly important franchise for us since we reignited it five years ago, and we’re excited for the new series to take the characters in a different direction with more humor, a younger and lighter feel and all-new dimensions to explore.”

Serving as series producers are Andy Suriano (character designer of Samurai Jack) and Ant Ward (the current “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” cartoon’s supervising producer).

“Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” aims to expand the franchise’s mythology, and will once more revolve around Leonardo, Raphael, Michelangelo, and Donatello. Their adventures will force them into confrontations with shadowy groups and a range of bizarre new mutants. And as they attempt to uncover New York City’s mystical secrets, the four brothers will discover and ultimately learn to wield mysterious ninja powers.
