Meet the Filipino makeup artist behind Iris Mittenaere’s winning look

People from all over the world witnessed Pia Wurtzbach pass on the Miss Universe crown to Iris Mittenaere of France on Monday, but unbeknownst to many, there was another “turnover” happening behind the scenes.

Make-up artist Gery Penaso, who created Pia's Miss Universe look in 2015, passed on his “crown” to RB Chanco, who created Iris' looks for both the preliminary competition and the grand coronation event.

Chanco admitted to being emotional when Miss France was announced the winner.

“Parang winning moment ko rin. Sabi ko, 'Ako ang nag-makeup sa kaniya,” she said in an interview.

Today is truly a momentous day of my life, especially in my career. I wish I could do the make-up of all the lovely girls particularly the ones who trusted me since day 1. But the great story today is about the gracious lady, who approached me with gratefulness, who willingly waited, and once again given me her trust for the final event. An event that will start a significant change & journey in her life. #MissFrance Iris Mittenaere @irismittenaeremf, it's my turn to say thank you for making this day more wonderful for me, and it gives me pleasure and pride to have #RBeautified the 2016 #MissUniverse! Chanco has been dubbed “the Makeup Artist of the Universe” because she did the makeup for many of the candidates, including those from Thailand, Colombia, Indonesia, Philippines, and Venezuela.

Her fans, both old and new, created the hashtag #RBConquersTheUniverse for her after many of the candidates she “beautified” made it to the Top 13.

RB's secret? Less drama, more natural beauty.

She opted for more simple looks to enhance the candidates' beauty instead of giving them major transformations with smokey eyes and dramatic false eyelashes—and it definitely worked!

In fact, Iris herself described RB as “the best makeup artist.”

The proud Pinay shared, "[She] approached me with gratefulness, willingly waited, and... [gave] me her trust for the final event—an event that will start a significant change & journey in her life."

"Wala munang kokontra, pagbigyan niyo na ako... Dahil nasa akin ang korona ngayon!" she quipped.

Before her Miss Universe fame, RB was already known as one of the country's most trusted celebrity makeup artists, having provided makeup services to stars like Kris Aquino, Bianca Gonzales, Angelica Panganiban, Julie Anne San Jose, and Anne Curtis. — Bianca Rose Dabu/BM, GMA News
