Miss Universe judges are looking for a strong female role model
The judges of the 65th Miss Universe pageant, which includes former titleholders Dayanara Torres, Sushmita Sen, and Leila Lopes, as well as Cynthia Bailey, Francine LeFrak, and Mickey Boardman, will be looking for strong female role-model during Monday's competition.
Torres, who won the title in 1993, said, “With so much going on in the world right now—so much pain and hatred and war, so many people suffering—definitely, I’m looking for a woman that is not just confident and beautiful, but also relatable, because she has an extraordinary job.
The former pageant winner added that a Miss Universe should be able to speak and be heard. "So many people want to do stuff, or talk, or reach out to people, but it’s not easy. The Miss Universe has that privilege with her. She must be able to relay a message and be firm on the platform she wants to create and work with.”
“What I’m looking for is very, very simple—a 21st century woman who’s not apologetic about being beautiful, she takes pride in it." Sen, who took the crown home to India in 1994, added. "She inspires the world and she does it by living her life as an example. She does not only say things, but she lives it.”

The next Miss Universe must also be able to leave a big impact on the world while being herself.
Bailey said, “We met a lot of amazing and beautiful women… I’m looking for someone confident, someone who to be a big impact to the world, someone with grace and style—the total package. Beauty inside and out.”
“I’m also looking for somebody who’s natural, someone who could be funny, and be real and normal. Beauty pageants have this stigma that the girls are like robots,” Torres added.

‘Very brutal’
If you thought that judging would be a breeze with a set criteria and a clear idea of who deserves the crown, you thought wrong, the judges themselves admitted.
Picking the top candidates from over 80 of the most beautiful women around the world is a tough job, especially if you know how all of them are deserving if only for the hard work they have given to reach their dreams.
LeFrak even called the entire judging process “very brutal.”
“So many of the woman are beautiful inside and beautiful outside, and they really have that extra something that makes them so special that when they walk into the room, you’d say ‘That is Miss Universe.’"
She added, "There were so many good and qualified ones, there are so many professionals—studying to be dentists and lawyers and so many different professions. We’re so impressed. They really want to make an impact to the world, and they want to impact women and girls. It’s going to be really rough.”
Boardman added, “They are all so worthy and so deserving. When you get here in Miss Universe, you have already gone through so many competitions, which makes them all deserving in some levels.”

Sen has had the chance to be a Miss Universe judge twice prior to this year, and it does not get any easier, the beauty queen admitted.
“It’s always difficult. This is my third time judging the Miss Universe and each time, it’s always a tough job to do—to find the girl that is empowering, confident, sweet, and that is relatable. You can talk to her, she has a heart. So many girls are so prepared and ready. I just can’t wait to see what happens because on that night, nobody knows what’s going to happen,” she said.
The former titleholder added, “This year, I’m actually very confused because I don’t know what will happen. There’s so many that are just like the one that we’re picking.”
