10 things to know about President Elpidio Quirino
He was the sixth President of the Republic and after 60 years, he is getting the burial he deserves. On Monday, President Benigno Aquino III led the re-interment of the remains of President Elpidio Quirino at the Libingan ng mga Bayani in Taguig City.
His remains were earlier exhumed from their original resting place in Manila South Cemetery.
Quirino was elected vice president in 1946, succeeding President Manual Roxas in 1948 after the latter died of a heart attack. Quirino served the remainder of the term and won the election in 1949. He stayed in office until 1953.
He survived an impeachment attempt and weathered turbulent political weather, negotiating with the HukBaLaHap and supporting the Philippines' allies in the Korean War.
While some might remember the year of his birth and death in compliance with the school history curriculum, there's more to know about this Ilocos Sur native.
